The Kalgoorlie-Boulder council approved the development of a gym at a workforce accommodation facility, despite concerns being raised about the need to integrate fly-in, fly-out workers with the local community.

During Monday night’s meeting, mayor Glenn Wilson said he felt stuck between “a rock and a hard spot” when considering Goldfields Villages’ application as he believed it was important the council supported its own facilities — such as the Goldfields Oasis gym.

“Part of our workforce accommodation policy is the integration with the rest of the community,” he said.

“I understand the need to improve the amenity for those who are using the workforce accommodation facility.

“Where I’m stuck is the fact that as a council we should be supporting the council amenities, as opposed to putting another separate gym in somewhere else.

“However, I understand that our current gym at the times that probably would be needed by those users of this facility . . . we are at capacity.

“It’s a tough position for council. We should be supporting our own policy and also our own particular amenities.

“However, the extra (pressure) that places (on) the Goldfields Oasis at that time is probably not conducive to a good outcome for all.”

Two applications were approved 6-0 for Goldfields Villages on Monday night, one totalling $193,000 at the Hopkins Street camp, including a 120sqm permanent marquee for a gym, four shade sails and retrospective approval for a back-up generator, a self-bunded fuel cell and a noise attenuation wall.

An $80,000 application for the Vivian Street camp was also approved, allowing five shade sails, a new bin storage area, noise attenuation wall and use of a portion of Vivian Street for goods delivery and vehicle manoeuvring.

Retrospective approval was also given for a back-up generator, self-bunded dual cell and three 40-foot fridge-freezer container units.
