Veteran Australian TV journalist George Negus has died after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 82.

He “passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones”, his family said in a statement.

They thanked Australian healthcare workers for supporting him “in the best possible way”.

“Despite the challenges diseases like Alzheimer’s inflict on families, we still shared beautiful times, laughter and happiness together in recent times.

“We also learnt a lot.”

Negus was a legend in the Australian media industry. He led coverage of foreign affairs and politics across numerous channels across his long and acclaimed career.

He was a pioneer of TV journalism and spent time reporting from the frontlines of conflicts around the world.

Negus first appeared on the ABC’s This Day Tonight and later on Nine’s 60 Minutes and Channel 10s 6.30 with George Negus.

He also hosted Foreign Correspondent on the ABC and Dateline on SBS.
