Vanessa Guthrie has been charged with leading a renewed board at under-pressure lithium and nickel group IGO.

Dr Guthrie, a prominent company director and chancellor of Curtin University, was on Thursday named as IGO’s next chair.

She will succeed Michael Nossal in January.

Her appointment – she will join the board in December – is one of several changes to the IGO board since an overhaul announced in June that was driven by residual shareholder anger over IGO’s disastrous takeover of nickel miner Western Areas three years ago.

Curtin University aside, Dr Guthrie is also a non-executive director of the ASX-listed Santos, Lynas Rare Earths and Orica, as well as deputy chair of Cricket Australia.

“I am pleased to be joining IGO at this pivotal time in the company’s history,” Dr Guthrie said in IGO’s ASX statement.

“IGO has a clear strategy and purpose and, as the Company transitions from its current operating base to new opportunities, the board has an important role to play in providing leadership and guidance while maintaining high standards of governance,” she said.

More to come.
