The local market for medicines and vaccines in Africa is currently valued at approximately $50 billion, and the demand for pharmaceutical products increases yearly at a geometric progression. With reports revealing that there are only about 375 local pharmaceutical manufacturers in the continent, the need for drastic measures to increase the number of local manufacturers in the continent is evident.

In comparison, China and India, each with roughly the same population as Africa have as many as 5,000 and 10,500 local pharmaceutical manufacturers, respectively, going by a 2019 McKinsey report – the number would have doubled by now.
