China says Taiwan, whose authorities rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims, is a purely inside matter and probably the most delicate and essential subject in relations with the United States.
In Beijing, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office expressed anger on the payments, which President Joe Biden stated he would signal into legislation on Wednesday.
The payments “send the wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces, and we are resolutely opposed to it”, spokesperson Zhu Fenglian instructed reporters.
“We urge the United States to take concrete actions to fulfil its commitment not to support Taiwan independence and to stop arming Taiwan in any way,” she added.
