The grandmother of Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been hit by a car at a bus stop metres from her Palmyra home, leaving the 89-year-old fighting for her life in hospital.
Coral Kerr was reportedly getting off a bus when she was hit by a white Great Wall ute in Palmyra near the intersection of Marmion and Justinian Streets about 10.45am on Friday.
“The 89-year-old female pedestrian was conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment of critical injuries,” a police spokesman said.
Ms Kerr lives down the road and had got off the bus just before the crash occurred, 9NEWS reported.
The driver of the car, a 63-year-old man, is assisting police.
Neighbours, who went to her aid, told 9NEWS that Ms Kerr “wasn’t really responding too much” after the incident.
“She was really sweaty and clammy . . . I think she was in shock obviously”.
One neighbour said she believed the driver tried to overtake the bus, which had stopped, before mounting the kerb.
“He decided he’d pull up and go on the footpath,” she said.
“She’s a lovely lady, so I hope everything goes well with her.”
An electricity pole was damaged during the crash and some homes lost power.
Roger Kerr — Sam Kerr’s father — is reportedly flying home from the Eastern States to be with his mother.
A Royal Perth Hospital spokesman confirmed Ms Kerr was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit on Friday.
Coral and her husband moved from India to Australia more than 50 years ago — enabling the successful soccer career of her granddaughter, Sam, who now leads the Matildas.
In 2020 she told Football Australia that Sam Kerr’s journey to international stardom was “absolutely amazing”.
“It’s hard to describe the feeling,” she said. “It’s so much pride and yet she’s just my granddaughter.”
