Traffic pandemonium will slam Perth this afternoon as footy fanatics descend on Optus Stadium for the highly anticipated finals match.

The Fremantle Dockers’ do-or-die elimination final against the Gold Coast Suns is expected to bring a crowd of nearly 60,000 to the Perth stadium, with Saturday’s game marking the first time the WA team has played finals since 2022.

Gates to the stadium open at 3.30pm, with bouncedown for the blockbuster match scheduled for 5.35pm.

Main Roads issued a warning to WA residents on Saturday morning, saying “heavy foot traffic and frequently stopping vehicles” are expected in the area.

“Ride share drop offs will happen on Sailani Avenue, East Perth, and tow away zones are in place,” officials said.

“Check street signs before parking.”

Main Roads has also reminded attendees of the intense match that public transport is included with their tickets.

The warning comes as heavy rains and damaging winds slam the coast, creating hazardous driving conditions and damaging homes across the metro area.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said State Emergency Services responded to 70 calls overnight from people with roof damage and water ingress in their homes.

Parts of Albany Highway near Forrestdale and Haynes also faced lane closures overnight due to flooding over the roads.

All lanes of the major highway have since reopened after floodwaters subsided. Motorists are being urged to remain vigilant while driving through the area.

Motorists navigating the roads in the wet weather are advised to:

  • Drive to the conditions
  • Switch headlights on
  • Ensure safe braking distance
  • Be patient and courteous
