Residents in the Perth Hills have woken to an extraordinary clean-up effort and thousands are still without power after a freak storm tore through the area, downing trees and powerlines and severely damaging properties.

Described by locals as a “tornado”, the severe thunderstorm hit the hills about 7.26pm on Wednesday night, causing carnage across several suburbs.

Trees have fallen on powerlines, on houses and debris has blocked roads and driveways.

Thousands of residents across the suburbs of Mundaring, Parkerville, Mt Helena, Sawyers Valley, Stoneville and Gidgegannup are expected to be without power until at least 8pm on Thursday.

“Due to severe thunderstorms, we’re experiencing a large number of faults in parts of the network,” Western Power said on Thursday.

“Our crews are responding to risks and making safe before undertaking repairs and restoring power. Current restoration times are estimated based on similar past events.

“They will be updated as out crews assess damage and repairs as required, and start restoration works.”

Amaroo Retreat, which is based in Mt Helena, has had to close its doors after suffering severe damage to the property.

“Our community has been severely impacted by today’s tornado, and unfortunately, we have sustained significant damage. With a heavy heart, we must inform you that we will be closed until further notice,” a social media post said.

“To our valued guests, we will be reaching out in the coming days to discuss your bookings. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this difficult time.

“To our community, we still have power but no water. If you need a cool place to rest or a spot to charge your devices, please stop by—we’re here to help.

“Thank you for your support as we assess the damage and work together to recover.”

Possum Valley Animal Sanctuary has also been “significantly damaged”.

“We have fences down, tanks smashed, shelters destroyed and power out, but all the animals are ok!” the organisation posted online.

“We are so grateful that all our residents survived natures fury yet again — but to say we are feeling defeated is an understatement.

“A huge thanks to our voli’s (sic) who swung into action tonight at short notice to herd goats, clear fence lines, check water troughs and make sure all the animals were OK.”
