Perth was awoken early on Sunday morning as thunder and dry lightning swept across the city.

While bringing little rain, the light show gave plenty of opportunities for photographers across Perth to grab a shot.

Sitting at the South Perth foreshore, photographer Balbir Singh said he was ready to wrap up his shoot for the night shortly after 1am when the storm moved over Kings Park.

The resulting image, a lightning bolt over the west end of the CBD, he said came from the “ideal opportunity” of waiting for the right moment.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman described the storms as part of a “mid-level trough”, which had moved over the south-west of the State.

“The storms started over the Perth area around 10pm last night and continued through the night,” she said.

“The rainfall associated with these storms was generally under 5mm throughout the metropolitan area with Perth Metro recording 3.4mm.”

Perth has recorded 15.4mm of rain across March, below the average of 19mm.
