Sorrento FC have made a statement of intent in their return to the top flight after they downed Stirling Macedonia 1-0 to take out the pre-season NPL WA men’s Night Series final.

Andrew Maranta’s second-half strike was enough to prove the difference between the two sides as the Gulls prevailed at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

A season after they prevailed in the State League Night Series final before going on to emphatically earn promotion back into the NPL, Sorrento claimed the chocolates when Keegan Chambers’ shot was saved by Stirling keeper James Bosdet, only for Maranta to fire home the rebound from the edge of the area.

Earlier on Saturday night, Kingsley Westside saw off Mandurah City on penalties to claim the State League Night Series.

Kingsley captain Robbie Linford scored the decisive spot-kick to clinch a 6-5 shoot-out victory following a 0-0 draw.

“It’s great to win a trophy and a great confidence builder going into the new season,” said Linford, who joined the club at the start of the year after moving from England.

Max Adamson and Luke Salmon spurned good chances for Kingsley in the second half, while Mandurah’s Ben Gallagher headed over when well placed.

Kingsley keeper Mateusz Zaniewski, who is on loan from Perth SC, was named player of the match.

Every game of the NPL WA men’s and women’s competition and State League divisions one and two will be available to watch live on Streamer.
