The New York City Council authorized a number of payments Thursday that may permit for enhanced security measures for EMS staff, together with physique armor and self-defense coaching.
The laws, initially sponsored by Minority Leader Joseph Borelli, would require that the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) present staff with extra security measures as they face numerous risks whereas on the job, together with assaults.
“These brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way every day to save New Yorkers’ lives,” Borelli mentioned in an announcement launched. “The least we can do is help protect them so they, too can get home safe to their families.”

“I have been pushing these bills for several years and pleased I was finally able to get them passed,” Borelli wrote on X, previously Twitter. “EMTs are not second-rate first responders and deserve the best equipment and training we can afford them.”

The payments will now head to Mayor Eric Adams’ desk.
EMS staff have been victims of bodily assaults in New York City up to now. In August 2023, a New York City man was indicted on fees of tried homicide and assault after having repeatedly stabbed an EMT at the back of an ambulance.
