Students at Hannans Primary School will learn and play with a new set of values which will aim to give them a headstart in their future endeavours.
The newly-designed STRIVE program was born out of the school’s “strive for excellence” motto and will now be the foundation of life on campus.
It stands for the values of success, teamwork, respect, innovation, voice and empathy.
School captains Hadleigh Hooper and Nick Frigo were part of the leadership team that helped create the program which was officially launched with a school fun-day on Friday.
“We know that strive means that we try hard at everything that we do so we’ve incorporated that,” Hadleigh said.
“It’s kind of just a guide, and we also have assemblies and at the assemblies we’re going to do the STRIVE student (awards) so if anyone sees someone representing one of our STRIVE values, then they will be nominated to win a certificate.”
Nick said those who get an award would also win a $5 canteen voucher as an incentive.
Principal Denise Delfs said the values were research-based and selected as ones the school believes will be most beneficial for students to have going forward in a modern world.
“The staff, students and school board worked together to research and develop a set of values and skills that we could use every day at the school,” she said.
“The joy for me is … if we can get kids to come into our office — little kids from the playground — and say ‘so and so showed me empathy because they helped me because I hurt my foot’.
“That gives me a little bit of confidence that in the future, I know that as they grow up that’s something they will take with them in their journey forward.
“I think those are the skills that moving forward they’ll need to be a successful citizen in the future.”
