Fans were treated to a thrilling day of football at Haynes Oval on Saturday, September 6, with the Cable Beach Greenbacks and Broome Towns each claiming a grand final win in the men’s and women’s West Kimberley Football League competitions respectively.

MEN’S

In the men’s grand final, the Cable Beach Greenbacks emerged victorious with an 18-point win over Broome Towns, turning the tables on last year’s loss in the same fixture.

The two sides had been neck-and-neck all season, each finishing with 10 wins and two losses, and the grand final reflected that balance — with only eight points separating them at the final change. But the Greenbacks steadied in the last quarter to close it out 9.6 (60) to 6.6 (42).

Towns were well served by Brennan Stack Sr, who finished with four goals in another stand-out performance. In just his second year since transferring from Derby Tigers, Stack has been a key figure for Towns, kicking 27 goals from nine games in 2025.

Wesleigh Hatch led the way for the Greenbacks with three goals, bringing his season tally to 11 and career total to 81 across 124 games.

The final blow came from Jordan King, who kicked the Greenbacks’ final goal with just 31 seconds left to play, sealing the win and sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

WOMEN’S

Earlier in the day, the women’s grand final delivered a heart-stopping finish, as the Broome Towns overcame a sluggish start to defeat the reigning premiers, the Cable Beach Greenbacks, by just four points.

Trailing by as much as 13 points at three-quarter-time, Towns surged in the final term, booting three goals to snatch a dramatic 6.3 (39) to 5.5 (35) win, turning the tables after losing last year’s decider to the same opposition.

Towns captain Tayla Thorogood and forward Brianna Mowatt shared top-scoring honours with two goals each. Thorogood made her goals count in the most important game of the year. Mowatt, in just her second footy season, capped off a brilliant year with 19 goals from 12 games.

For Greenbacks, forward Katherine Dann was again a stand-out, kicking three goals. A triple-code athlete across netball, basketball and football, Dann added to her exceptional record — now 190 goals from 127 games — and was a consistent threat throughout the match.

Both matches reflected the closeness and quality of competition this season. In a rare twist, each grand final was a reverse of the 2024 result: Cable Beach avenged their loss to Towns in the men’s, while Towns reversed the script in the women’s, toppling last year’s premiers.
