Emilia Perez leads the Oscar nominations with 13 nods including best picture, actress for Karla Sofia Gascon, supporting actress for Zoe Saldana and director for Jacques Audiard.

The French-made, Spanish-language musical about a transgender woman has been a wild success story across the awards season and goes into the race a leading contender.

It also broke the record for most nominations ever for a non-English language film, a title previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which both had 10 nods.

In second place in the nominations stakes are The Brutalist and Wicked with 10 nominations apiece.

Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown also performed well with eight nominations including for stars Timothee Chalamet and Monica Barbaro and a somewhat surprising nod for director James Mangold.

Demi Moore will chase her first Oscar in the actress race for The Substance, which was nominated in five categories overall. Moore won a Golden Globe for her performance and her widely praised acceptance speech put momentum behind her awards campaign.

Among the Australians nominated were Guy Pearce for his role in The Brutalist, as well film Memoir of a Snail in animated feature which was directed by Adam Elliot.

Sebastian Stan was a surprise name in the actor category having nabbed a nomination for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice. The film struggled to secure American distribution after its Cannes premiere. Stan’s co-star, Jeremy Strong, was also nominated.

Another head-turner was Brazilian film I’m Still Here sneaking into the best picture category but it gained considerable notice after its lead actor, Fernanda Torres, won a Golden Globe for her performance, which likely helped push it onto Oscar voters’ viewing lists.

Notable misses include Nicole Kidman for Babygirl, Angelina Jolie for Maria, Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths, Daniel Craig for Queer and Conclave director Edward Berger.

Kidman was a favourite for a nod earlier but, like Jolie and Gladiator II’s Denzel Washington, she had missed out on key nominations by other awards bodies in the lead-up, and, for the past few weeks, was considered an outside chance.

The nominations were delayed as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires which coincided with the nominations voting period. The Academy extended the deadline.

Despite speculation and some UK media reporting that the Oscars were on the verge of cancellation, the Academy stridently denied the rumours.

The ceremony will go ahead but it’s expected that it will feature a component to “honour Los Angeles as a city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience,” according to a letter sent by Academy chief executive Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang.

But there will not be any live musical performances from the nominated songs. At the 2024 ceremony, Ryan Gosling stole the show with his energetic rendition of “I’m Just Ken”.

The Oscars are voted on by its invitation-only membership, which consists of roughly 10,000 industry professionals. Each branch, for example, actors, writers or documentaries, nominate in their corresponding category while everyone can nominate in the best picture category. All members can vote in every category for the final result.

The ceremony will be held on March 3 with Conan O’Brien to serve as host.
