A bushfire burning north of Bremer Bay has been upgraded to an emergency warning with lives and properties at risk on Friday afternoon.

People south of South Coast Highway near the Fitzgerald townsite in the suburbs of West Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald River National Park and West River are urged to evacuate now if the way is safe.

“There is a possible threat to lives or homes,” the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said.

The bushfire was first reported at 6pm on Thursday following a lightning strike, with the fire uncontained and out-of-control at 5pm on Friday.

The emergency alert said the fire was moving in a northerly direction.

“If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place. This may be with family or friends away from the area,” the emergency alert said.

“Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.”

The Department is managing the fire, with at least 75 career and volunteer firefighters at the scene. Water bombers are also assisting ground crews.

Several roads are closed including South Coast Highway between West River and Mallee Road.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

A separate watch and act alert is in place for resident north of South Coast Highway.
