A French national killed in the Bondi Beach terror attack has been laid to rest in southern Israel.

Dan Elkayam, 27, was one of 15 innocent people killed when Sajid Akram and son Naveed allegedly opened fire on the Chanukah By the Sea event earlier this month.

At the time of the attack, Mr Elkayam was at the beach socialising with friends when he decided to join the festivities.

Mr Elkayam had been living in Sydney’s eastern suburbs with his girlfriend and played semi-professional soccer with Rockdale Ilinden FC.

His death was first announced by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who described the alleged attack as a “tragic manifestation of an outrageous outpouring of anti-Semitic hatred to which we must put a stop”.

Mr Elkayam was farewelled at a memorial in Sydney before his remains were returned to Israel for a funeral service on Thursday in the southern city of Ashdod.

His mother, Annie, told the funeral that her “heart was in a thousand pieces”, the Times of Israel reported.

“You are gone because you were Jewish, even though you were open to all communities,” she said.

Ashdod Mayor Yechiel Lasri delivered a eulogy for Mr Elkayim, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Mr Lasri said Ashdod would observe a day of mourning in his honour.

“In every photo of Dan, he looks angelic, full of joy and zest for life,” he said.

Ms Lasri praised Mr Elkayim’s heroism during the alleged attack.

“Dan didn’t think of himself,“ he said.

“He acted with nobility, willing to give his life for others, but tragically, both he and the child were murdered.

“The Jewish people will continue to stand firm, spreading light even in dark times.”

In an earlier statement, Mr Elkayim’s family said he left behind not only his partner in Australia but parents, brothers, nieces and nephews in Paris, where he was raised.

“Dan was a 27-year-old IT engineer who was working and being sponsored by NBCUniversal.

“He was beginning to build his future in Australia, a country he loved.”

Mr Elkayam’s family said the young man “loved life – fully and intensely”.

“He travelled the world and was known for his gentle, kind, fun and loving nature, making friends wherever he went,” they said.

“Dan brought light wherever he went and inspired countless people through the way he lived. His smile could light up any room.

“To say that Dan will be missed is not enough. He was a person who truly wanted to do good in the world, to share his love of life and his sense of adventure with everyone around him.”

Funerals were held throughout the past two weeks for the victims of the alleged terror attack.

At least one police officer injured in the alleged attack remained in hospital on Wednesday, while another was released having lost sight in one eye.

Naveed Akram remains behind bars on remained as he faces more than 50 charges, including murder.
