Big Bash fans will need to be on their toes early if they want to take home a unique souvenir from this season’s game, with the league introducing the ‘Keep the Ball’ initiative.

Inspired by Major League Baseball, where fans can keep balls hit into the stands, any ball that is hit or bounces into the crowd in the first over of each inning can be kept by whoever manages to pouch it.

The league will use sponsored Westpac balls for the first over of each innings, with umpires to carry spare balls out to the field to ensure game time is not lost.

A new ball is to be introduced at the start of the second over, which will remain in play for the rest of each innings to ensure consistency.

Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson said he hoped the scheme could help drive a deeper connection with fans and provide for viral social media moments.

“Westpac Keep the Ball is a celebration of our passionate fans and a chance to bring them closer to the game,” he said.

“Player connection drives the Big Bash Leagues, and this initiative further demonstrates our commitment to delivering fan-focused innovation.

“Building ‘Keep the Ball’ in collaboration with Westpac has been a priority since their onboarding, and we’re thankful for their support to bring this unforgettable moment to life.”

The league has also modified the penalties for slow over rates, with full poweplay fielding restrictions to be imposed on teams should they fail to complete their innings within five minutes of the innings countdown clock expiring.

“While it adds an element of excitement to the conclusion of each innings, the stronger penalty for over rates is consistent with our ongoing commitment to keeping matches fast-paced and family-friendly,” Dobson said.
