A night grand final will be held for the first time in AFLW history in a ruling by the league commission that could also push the men’s decider under lights next year.
AFLW boss Emma Moore said the move to stage the match at 7.45pm eastern daylight time on Saturday, November 30 would “expose more people to our great game”.
Ikon Park (North Melbourne and Hawthorn), Springfield (Brisbane) and Norwood Oval (Adelaide) were the most likely venues to hold the clash, with AFL football boss Laura Kane ruling out the prospect of Marvel Stadium being used if ticket demand was high.
“For the first time in AFLW history, the 2024 AFLW grand final will be played under lights in a prime-time evening slot,” Moore said on Wednesday.
“This will enable more people to watch the biggest game on the AFLW calendar, exposing more people to our great game and an unforgettable atmosphere to close the season.
“It will also create a dazzling spectacle for the grand final entertainment, which will be announced shortly.”
The timeslot chosen meant that if fifth-placed Fremantle was to host the decider, it would technically be a twilight fixture with a 4.45pm start local time.
