A man in his 60s is in hospital after his home was engulfed by flames early this morning while he was still inside.

Police and Department of Fire and Emergency Services were called to a house fire on Otago Mews in Mirrabooka about 1am.

Police were the first to arrive at the scene.

The occupant of the home, a man in his 60s, was still inside when police arrived.

They smashed a window to gain entry to the home and help the man, police said.

The officers found the man inside the burning home and extricated him from the premises.

He was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital under lights and sirens for treatment of significant smoke inhalation and possible other injuries.

Multiple police officers also suffered various degrees of smoke inhalation.

One officer in particular was also conveyed by ambulance to FSH for further treatment.

Police confirmed the cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

DFES officers extinguished the fire, but the home is badly damaged.
