A man has been injured in a shark attack while spearfishing off Curtis Island near Gladstone on Queensland’s central coast.
The man aged in his 60s was bitten by the shark receiving lacerations and abrasions to both his arms about 8.25am on Monday.
He was taken to Curtis Island where he was met by emergency services who rushed him to Gladstone Hospital with the assistance of a police boat.
Gladstone Ambulance Station acting officer in charge Danielle Martin said the man had shark tooth mark and injuries to both forearms.
Ms Martin said bystanders performed first aid and controlled the bleeding appropriately before he was taken to Gladstone.
“We don’t respond to these very often, but when we do, they’re a unique incident which requires us to work with other services to bring the patient in in a timely manner,” he said.
“We were lucky in this case a shark bites can be significant, but we were able to transport him with minor to moderate injuries, on this occasion.”
A Fisheries Queensland spokesperson said there were no shark nets or drumlines at the location where the man was attacked and they were unsure of the circumstances or the shark species involved.
“Our thoughts are with the injured man and anyone who witnessed the incident, as well as those who assisted at the scene,” the spokesperson said.
“We will work with relevant authorities to provide any assistance as required.”
