Valerie the dachshund may well be the world’s most famous sausage dog.

The beloved pooch was with her owners on Kangaroo Island in November 2023.

Owners Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock had put Valerie in a pen while then went out, then filled with horror as they returned to find their pet had escaped and run away.

After an incredible search and rescue operation that over 1000 people took part in, Valerie the dachshund has been rescued “fit and well”.

“Kangala Wildlife Rescue is overjoyed to announce the successful rescue of Valerie, the miniature dachshund who went missing on Kangaroo Island 529 days ago,” Kangala Wildlife Rescue said in a statement on social media.

“After weeks of tireless efforts by Kangala Wildlife Rescue volunteers and partner organisations Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well.

“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents, Josh and Georgia.”

Ms Gardner took to social media to share her gratitude for the rescue of the beloved four legged friend.

“For anyone who’s ever lost a pet, your feelings are valid and never give up hope,” she wrote.

“Sometimes good things happen to good people.

“Incredibly grateful for Kangala Wildlife Rescue, the Kangaroo Island community, our friends, family and everyone who has contributed their support to rescue Val.

“We’ll see you soon, Valerie.”

Kangala Wildlife Rescue posted a video of Valerie when they announced the incredible news, with the dachshund giving a little wink the the camera as if she knew the world was watching.
