A patient has been charged after allegedly stabbing his 85-year old doctor in the neck at a Sydney medical clinic.

Emergency services rushed to a general practice on Pitt St in Sydney about 7pm on Friday, following reports of an assault.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers found the elderly doctor with a stab wound to his neck.

Paramedics treated the medical practitioner for serious injuries before he was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A 57-year old man was arrested at the scene and was taken to Surry Hills Police Station before he was escorted to hospital for assessment under police guard.

Police allege the man was being treated by the doctor when he was stabbed.

Police charged the man with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on Saturday.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on November 27.
