Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue Group is set to have a new rescue boat put into service in the coming weeks after a successful trial.
The new IBIS III rescue craft was manufactured by Westerberg Marine at its Albany facility before being handed over to the Broome VSRG for testing in November.
The craft has ANURA Amphibious Systems’ S45 system, which enables the vessel to deploy into the ocean from the beach using a retractable wheel system, providing rescue teams with a ready-to-launch craft for both emergency situations and routine coastal operations.
It also has a comprehensive suite of specialised rescue technology, including advanced communications equipment and SIMRAD navigation systems.
Three members of Broome Marine Rescue put the craft through rigorous testing on both sea and land. They said vessel had impressive handling, precise control, and smooth transition between land and marine modes.
Westerberg Marine managing director Rhys Jones said the project was an important milestone for the company.
“This was our first vessel incorporating the Anura amphibious system, and it represented a significant learning journey for our team,” he said.
“Anura’s expertise and support throughout the process were invaluable, ensuring a smooth build and an excellent final outcome.
“We thrive on tackling technically demanding and innovative projects, and we’re excited to continue this partnership on additional vessels now underway.”
An Anura spokesperson said the collaboration reinforced the strong alignment between the two companies.
“The Westerberg Marine team were professional, pragmatic, and highly collaborative throughout the project — qualities we value immensely in our build partners,” they said.
“Their commitment to quality and their willingness to push into new territory made this an exceptional first project together. We look forward to supporting the next stages of their growing amphibious program.”
