Israel Strikes Central Beirut, Expanding Conflict Zone

The Israeli military launched a new wave of strikes on central Beirut on Thursday, saying it was targeting infrastructure belonging to the militant group Hezbollah. The bombardment crystallized fears that the war was expanding beyond the southern outskirts of Lebanon’s capital.

The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for the center part of the city. It’s the first time that they have done so since hostilities escalated. In that time, we’ve seen strikes concentrated in the southern outskirts of Beirut, areas that are known to have a lot of Hezbollah support and be places where Hezbollah holds a lot of sway.
