Lucas Herbert has forced himself into contention for a maiden LIV Golf individual title in Hong Kong.

The 30-year-old Australian fired a flawless five-under 65 on Saturday and will enter the final round three shots behind joint leaders Jon Rahm (65), Thomas Detry (66) and Harold Varner III (63), who are at 17 under.

Runner-up in the New Zealand Open last weekend, Herbert will attempt to grab a LIV Golf breakthrough after he starts the final day in seventh place.

Already a winner in his LIV debut this season, fellow Australian Elvis Smylie shot a 67 to be tied for 12th at 10 under, with countrymen Marc Leishman (68, -8) and Cameron Smith (66, -6) further back.

American Varner stormed into the title picture with seven birdies in his unblemished round at Hong Kong Golf Club on Saturday.

He also helped ensure his Smash GC outfit lead the teams competition at 44 under from Detry’s Four Aces, with Rahm’s Legion XIII in third.

Herbert and Smylie have done most of the work to have the all-Australian Ripper GC in sixth, six shots from the lead.
