Swan Districts forward Tom Edwards will get a chance to try to earn a spot on Essendon’s list after being invited to train later this month.
The West Australian can reveal the 25-year-old will head to Melbourne early next week for a stint at the Bombers who have one spot to fill on their list through the pre-season supplementary signing period.
It’s a big move for Edwards, who has kicked 109 goals in 66 games for the Swans since making his league debut in 2020.
Edwards is a strong-marking 191cm forward who is coming off two strong seasons, including kicking a career-best 39 goals in 19 games for the Bassendean-based club this year — including an equal career-high six against East Perth in round 12.
He was on the radar of several clubs this off-season and has been working with Colin Young of Young Guns Management for the past two years.
Edwards’ stint will include a chance to play in an unofficial match simulation against the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval on Saturday, February 15.
Essendon have a strong history of grabbing mature-age players out of the WAFL in recent years.
Bombers star Nic Martin has played 67 games since joining the club in the 2021 pre-season, while Alec Waterman kicked 27 goals in 22 games after being picked up the previous summer.
Former-listed defender Kaine Baldwin and Essendon VFL star Will Hoare are currently training with the club in the hopes of earning an AFL lifeline, but one is set to make way for Edwards’ arrival.
Edwards isn’t the only Swan Districts product hoping to get a chance through the SSP draft, with former Hawthorn first-round draftee Denver Grainger-Barras training at Carlton.
