Footy analyst David King says Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is “asking for trouble” if he doesn’t send a tag to at least one of Sydney’s star duo Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner on Sunday.
After an appalling performance to start the season against the Cats, going down by 78 points at GMHBA Stadium, the Dockers’ clash with the Swans has become a must-win game to re-establish their pre-season optimism.
And stopping Sydney’s midfield stars could be the key.
King pointed to Fremantle allowing Geelong recruit Bailey Smith to slice and dice them on his debut in the blue hoops last weekend.
Smith had the ball on demand last Saturday, collecting a game-high 32 disposals to go with seven clearances, five marks, five tackles and a goal.
A performance King said Longmuir and the Dockers simply could not allow a repeat of.
“I watched Bailey Smith run around last week and get 30 touches playing an uncontested game of footy and just slice them for 120 minutes,” he said on SEN.
“Is (Longmuir) going to tag Heeney? Is he going to tag Warner? Because if you don’t, you’re asking for trouble. You’ve got to take something off the opposition.”
Fremantle will be boosted by former Tiger Shai Bolton coming in for his club debut, while Liam Reidy and Karl Worner are casualties of the bitter round one result.
The clash is also vital to the Swans and new coach Dean Cox, who have suffered dual defeats to open their campaign after being annihilated in the 2024 decider against Brisbane.
History is on the Swans’ side, Sydney having won their last three clashes against the Dockers in Perth by an average margin of 31 points.
However, Fremantle will be boosted by their faithful fans as well as be eager to show the pre-season hype was justified.
