One of Australia’s big four banks has apologised to its customers after a major technology break shut down online banking services around the nation.

The outage has been affecting a significant portion of Commonwealth Bank customers across Australia with people struggling to do any online banking.

Services were restored on Thursday afternoon according to a statement from the bank after reports of ATM’s closing themselves automatically and people unable to purchase groceries at supermarkets.

“Some of our services are currently unavailable, and we’re urgently working to fix this,” the Bank said via messaging on their website at the height of the incident.

The Commonwealth Banking app experienced issues as many customers struggled to move funds between accounts.

“The auto teller I was at just shut down and I couldn’t get any cash out,” one caller to Sydney’s 2GB said.

Another customer wrote via a text line that they were caught short at the supermarket checkout and could not top up their account to pay.

Downdetector had identified over 7000 incident reports from customers with CommBank at 12.30pm (AEST).

Responding to questions from The Nightly, a bank spokesperson said a statement on the outage that “an issue today (Thursday) affecting some of our services is currently being fixed.”

“Some of our services were unavailable for approximately an hour before they started being restored.

“No branches were closed as a result of the outage.

“CommBank banking services, including payments, online access and ATMs are being restored.”

The bank released a further statement at 2.44pm (AEST) declaring the technical issues had been fixed and all services have returned to normal.

“All services are now restored,” the spokesperson said.

“We apologise and thank customers for their patience and for the latest information about CommBank services please visit our website.”
