BETRAYAL
Hun Sen launched a tirade against the Shinawatra family during the livestream, claiming that he had been betrayed.
“They betrayed me, so now I must expose them,” he said, as reported by Thai news site The Nation. “Even Paetongtarn knows she’s guilty too.”
The former Cambodian leader said Paetongtarn had visited his home after meeting his country’s leaders, and discussed her Cabinet plans and “internal problems” with him.
“But I chose not to tell her about Cambodia’s internal affairs – because if she can talk about her own team so openly, I fear she may one day do the same to me,” he said, as reported by The Nation.
Hun Sen said he was “revealing all the secrets now” as Paetongtarn had insulted him and called his son “unprofessional”.
He also hit out at Thaksin, claiming the former Thai prime minister was not genuinely ill, reported the Bangkok Post.
“I hope Thailand gets a new prime minister – someone who can solve problems with Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar,” Hun Sen said, as reported by The Nation.
FALLOUT OF PHONE CALL
Paetongtarn’s government was slashed to a tiny majority last week after the leaked phone call triggered the departure of the conservative Bhumjaithai party.
The party, which was the second largest in the alliance, said the phone call had “damaged the sovereignty and well-being of the country and Thai Army”.
Critics slammed the 38-year-old for insulting the military – a powerful force in Thai politics – and for being too deferential, calling for her resignation.
The Thai prime minister apologised last week and managed to shore up her coalition. However, a group of conservative senators has submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court calling for her to be sacked.
The court may decide on Tuesday whether to accept the case, but its president, Nakharin Mektrairat, told reporters this week that it would be up to the nine judges to decide the timeframe.
If the court accepts the case, it may suspend her from office while it considers it, with a ruling expected to take several months.
