Albany Police want public help after multiple railway track signal devices, that have the potential to detonate, were stolen from a train line about 16km west of Albany on Thursday.
Albany officer-in-charge acting Sen. Sgt Dave Costello said six detonators were stolen from a train line in Elleker, near Lower Denmark Road and Old School Road.
The devices are pressure-sensitive and can explode if mishandled.
Sen Sgt. Costello said staff noticed the detonators missing on Friday morning when they arrived at work, but police had identified the devices were taken on Thursday afternoon.
“What these things are used for is for the train drivers when the train drives over them, and that alerts them to the fact that there’s some track works going on,” he said.
Sen Sgt. Costello said he does not think they’re a massive risk to the community but would rather “get them back”.
“The reason I’m appealing to the public is because these things detonate, and we don’t want them to fall into the hands of our vulnerable children and have an accident we could possibly prevent,” he said.
“Let’s get these things back so we don’t have any accidents that we can avoid.
“We’re looking at some CCTV opportunities as well, but we don’t get a lot of this stuff down in Albany, and I’m really asking for the community to support us in findings and keep everybody safe.”
If you have any information regarding the theft of the devices, please contact Albany Police on 9892 9300 (Option 4) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppperswa.com.au and provide reference number 230125 1554 63216.
