Anthony Albanese’s popularity has slumped following Angus Taylor’s election as opposition leader, according to a major poll.

The latest Newspoll, which surveyed 1237 voters between Monday and Thursday last week, showed Mr Albanese still led as preferred prime minister, coming in at 45 per cent to Mr Taylor’s 37 per cent.

But it was down on polling late last year, when the Prime Minister was leading former opposition leader Sussan Ley 54 per cent to 27 per cent.

Primary support for Labor also fell to 32 per cent, down from a high of 37 per cent in October while the Coalition rose from a historic low of 18 per cent to 20 per cent.

One Nation plateaued, holding at 27 per cent. Much of the crossbench also held study at 10 per cent.

But the Greens fell one point to 11 per cent.

The results have put a pause on One Nation’s meteoric rise in the polls over summer, which some analysts and commentators suggested would be short-lived, spurred by MP Barnaby Joyce’s defection and chaos within the Coalition.

Pundits have pointed to the upcoming election in South Australia as a test of One Nation’s support.

Polling last month suggested the state Liberal Party could be facing an existential threat from One Nation, with the far right populist party’s core support skyrocketing to 24 per cent while the Liberals’ primary vote collapsed to 14 per cent.

If replicated across the state, the Liberal Party could lose its 13 seats – a threat all the more likely in its tenuously held rural and regional seats.
