Cable Beach have claimed their spot in West Kimberley Football League grand final after surviving a furious late game comeback from reigning premiers Broome Towns at the weekend.
Cable Beach dominated from the outset as the two sides clashed at Haynes Oval on Saturday afternoon, piling on three goals in a burst with Rhonen Maher kicking one early before Keifer Yu and Jordan King added another two, to take a 20-point lead.
In the second term, Towns finally broke through with Daniel Russo slotting their first goal before Troy Douglass nailed another on the siren to breathe life into the contest, trimming the margin to seven-points at half-time.
Cable Beach responded with a decisive run in the third quarter with Sonny Dann snapping a goal before Yu and King kicked back-to-back goals, stretching the lead to 24-points.
But Towns refused to fold, launching a stunning fightback in the final term.
Towns’ Geoffrey Saunders sparked the surge with a goal, followed by Brodie Wall and Chad Barns and Alex Valli’s clutch goal in the dying minutes cut the deficit to a single point.
Yet a last-gasp behind from Cable Beach gave them breathing room, and they held on to win, 7.5 (47) to 6.9 (45).
Cable Beach’s Yu and King were the top scorers of the match on two goals each while Daniel Russo, Troy Douglass, Geoffrey Saunders, Brodie Wall, Chad Barns and Alex Valli were the top scorers for Towns with one goal each.
Elsewhere in the league, the Broome Bulls stormed into the preliminary final picture, ending Looma Eagles’ season with an impressive 42-point win.
The opening term was an arm-wrestle, with Cooper Osborne getting the Bulls going early before Looma’s Remahli Skeen and Jason Baird-Wunungmurra both scored goals to edge the Eagles in front at quarter-time.
But the second quarter belonged to the Bulls with Clive Djiagween scoring the first goal of the term, followed by Brent Fotheringhame kicking two goals within five minutes to take control of the game by half-time.
The momentum kept rolling for the Bulls in the second half with Hayden Jones, Reece Gordon and Jason Hemphill all kicking a goal and stretching the Bulls lead to 27 points heading into the final term.
With the Eagles chasing, Broome put the foot down.
Fotheringhame added two more goals to finish with four for the afternoon, while Jasper John and Blake Rowlinson joined the party with one of their own.
Baird-Wunungmurra kicked Looma’s only major of the last term, but the damage was long done as the Bulls closed out the game in style, 12.4 (76) to 4.10 (34).
The Bulls’ Fotheringhame led the scoring with four goals, while Baird-Wunungmurra was the top scorer for Looma with two goals.
Looma bow out of the competition, while the Bulls face Broome Towns at Haynes Oval on August 30 at 11.30am to decide who earns the right to meet Cable Beach in the grand final.
