West Coast great Dean Cox is set to be announced as the new coach of the Sydney Swans following John Longmire’s bombshell resignation.
Cox, a 2006 premiership player for the Eagles, was the frontrunner for his former club’s vacant coaching position last season but knocked back the job to remain at the Swans as an assistant.
Longmire was contracted for 2025 but has quit, effective immediately, with a media conference scheduled for later this morning.
The club is expected to announce both Longmire’s resignation and Cox’s appointment as senior coach.
Cox, 43, played 290 games for West Coast, winning the club’s best and fairest award in 2008 and was named All-Australian six times.
He is widely considered one of the greatest ruckmen of the modern era.
Longmire, 53, had been contemplating life after the Swans in the wake of the club’s shock grand final loss to Brisbane, 7News’ Mitch Cleary reports.
But rather than take a leave of absence, Longmire has decided to walk away from the game after 14 seasons at the helm.
Appointed Sydney coach in 2011, Longmire led the club to the 2012 premiership, has reached four other grand finals and only missed finals twice in his career.
His overall record stands at 208 wins from 333 matches.
