DETAILS
Juba, South Sudan– During a heated session at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Sudan levied serious accusations against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), claiming it has been arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing 14-month civil war. Sudan’s UN ambassador, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, announced plans to present evidence of the UAE’s actions to the International Criminal Court, asserting the need for the international community to “walk the extra mile” in addressing this issue.
The accusation prompted a sharp rebuttal from the UAE’s Ambassador, Mohamed Abushahab, who dismissed the claims as “ludicrous” and a distraction from the dire situation on the ground. He questioned Sudan’s refusal to participate in peace talks and its role in blocking humanitarian aid.
The discourse at the UNSC comes amid worsening conditions in Sudan, where aid agencies warn of the world’s largest impending hunger crisis. The country has seen more than 14,000 deaths and 33,000 injuries since conflicts escalated into war last year. The humanitarian situation is particularly dire in Darfur, where the RSF continues a siege on el-Fasher, the last army stronghold in the region.
A January UN report supported claims of the UAE’s involvement, citing “credible” evidence of weapon shipments to the RSF from northern Chad. Despite these accusations, the UAE has denied any wrongdoing.
As the international community, led by the United States and Saudi Arabia, pushes for revived ceasefire talks, the UNSC has taken a firm stance, recently passing a resolution demanding the RSF halt its siege of el-Fasher and withdraw all fighters.
The ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis highlight the complex dynamics of Sudan’s civil war, marked by deep ethnic divisions and international intrigue, underscoring the urgent need for a cohesive global response to prevent further atrocities and alleviate civilian suffering.
