Albany bike path infrastructure will be improved through $2.7 million funding from the State Government for eight projects to be completed by 2027-28.
Announced last Wednesday, the funding comes from the most recent round of grants awarded through the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program, which has previously awarded $475,000 for protected bike lanes connecting the Albany central business district to Emu Point and Middleton Beach.
Symers Street in Centennial Park, Reidy Drive in Spencer Park, Chester Pass Road, Albany Highway between Warrenup and Anson Road, Allwood Parade in Bayonet Head, Mueller Street in Lockyer and Gledhow, and South Coast Highway, will receive shared paths to connect schools, the CBD, residents and shopping centres.
A shared path along Henry Street in Milpara will receive $650,000 and will connect Adelaide, Rufus and Henry streets to Chester Pass Road.
WA Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the City of Albany had received a “record” amount of funding through the grant program to deliver cycling infrastructure.
“Albany is a fantastic city and this significant investment by the Cook Labor Government will make it easier for locals and tourists to get around on foot and two wheels,” she said.
“These projects will better connect the city, encourage people to leave the car at home and make Albany a more vibrant place to live and visit.”
Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens said the eight projects would increase safety and create a network of accessibility to key areas.
“I am proud to see another significant investment by this Government into walking and cycling infrastructure in our city,” she said.
“Albany is an incredible place to live, and through projects like these, and the recently completed Albany Ring Road, the Cook Labor Government is making it safer and easier for locals to get around.”
